What to wear-Family Edition

But what do we wear!?

One of the most common questions I get before a session is: What should we wear? And I get it—choosing outfits for the whole family can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. With a few simple tips and a focus on natural tones, your family can look beautifully coordinated and relaxed.

Start with mom. Her outfit often sets the tone for the whole family’s look. A soft, neutral dress with gentle movement photographs beautifully, especially in golden fall light. Once you’ve chosen her outfit, build everyone else’s wardrobe around that color palette—think earthy tones, soft whites, creams, taupes, warm grays, and gentle muted hues like dusty rose or sage. Choosing one color family and weaving it through everyone’s clothing keeps your photos feeling cohesive and timeless.

For girls, classic floral patterns or textured layers like knits, linen, or a simple ruffle detail add subtle interest without distracting. Boys look great in light-colored, stripe or button-down shirts, paired with neutral pants or rolled sleeves for a laid-back feel. And don’t overthink shoes—bare feet are always welcome, especially for little ones.

Accessories like hats, cardigans, or a simple hair bow can elevate your look without feeling fussy. The goal is to keep it natural and comfortable—something that feels like you, just a little more polished. When your wardrobe feels effortless, your session will too. Fall is a beautiful time of year, and these soft, neutral tones help keep the focus right where it belongs—on your family's connection.
